Tips To Have A Fun Fall Family Session! | Rockville Family Photographer

The leaves are changing color, the air is more crisp, the cosey sweaters are coming out of the closet and it’s time to plan your fall family session! If you’ve booked your portraits or your still thinking about scheduling a session, this post is for you!

Fall is the perfect time to capture your updated family pictures or your very first family portrait session. Between the gorgeous colors of the leaves and the beautiful warm light, there is no shortage of magical backdrops for photos. To make the most of your fall session, follow these simple tips:

1. Prep your family for a fun session: Talk to your kids about the session ahead of time, but don’t make a big deal of it. Let them know it’s going to be a fun time, and they don’t need to worry about putting on a special smile or behaving in any specific way. You can even introduce them to me by sharing my first name, so it feels like you’re all hanging out with a friend rather than a stranger

2. Fill Those Tummies: remember, hungry tummies lead to grumpy faces. So, make sure your kids are well-fed before the shoot. Maybe a quick snack or meal before the session to keep their energy up and those frowns away.

3. Coordinated, Not Matchy-Matchy: Dress your family in coordinated, complementary colors and styles but do plan to be matchy matchy. I typically suggest planning moms outfit first and pulling in colors that work well with it. And make sure everyone is comfortable and happy (enough) in their outfits. A detailed explanation of how to do this and examples are here if you need it.

4. It’s All About Fun: Don’t stress if your little ones aren’t flashing their best smiles for the camera. As they warm up, I expect them to be more relaxed and smiley. And keep in mind, my goal is to ensure that when I capture that picture-perfect moment with your child smiling at the camera, you’re all set and not distracted by watching them instead of the lens. I’ll take care of the kids!

5. Treats and Toys? Not Just Yet: Here’s the deal, your welcome to bring them and hide them in your bag. I’ll give you the green light if and when they’re needed. Most times, we won’t even use them because they can cause distractions and messiness. If you do bring snacks, make sure they’re clean and quick to eat – nothing that’ll stain outfits, leave crumbs, or dirty those cute faces!

Remember, fall photo shoots are all about creating beautiful memories that capture your family’s unique spirit. So, trust in the process, embrace the season, and let’s create some gorgeous family portraits together!
