What To Wear For Your Portrait Session | Maryland, Family Photographer

When clients book a session the topic they most often want to discuss is what to wear! Below I’ve included some of my favorite tips and a couple images from previous session when clients nailed their outfit choices. See my tips below:

Don’t match, coordinate instead

Gone are the days of putting your whole family in jeans and matching colored shirts. Instead try coordinating your colors so they all your outfits look good together. You can do this by selecting 2-3 colors and adding in neutrals (gray, cream, ivory, tan etc).  Also consider, adding in accessories and layering to tie your colors together. Lastly, I suggest avoiding really bright colors, white or green (if you have an outdoor session scheduled) for the best overall look.

Make your family the star of the photo

One of my most important tips is to avoid large logos, writing or pictures on shirts. These will distract from the people in your photo and draw too much attention to your clothing. Additionally, large stripes, bold patterns, or an excess of varying patterns can similarly overpower the overall image. A single pattern on one family member would work well. When a pattern is used, make sure your other outfits consist of solids or subtle patterns to maintain a harmonious look in your photographs.

Put all your clothes together before the session

Remember when selecting your outfits, throw all your clothes on your bed to see how they all look together. And clients, feel free to snap a quick photo and email it to me if you have any questions or want my opinion on your selection. I’m more than happy to help you put together a cohesive look for your family!

Be comfortable!

Lastly, remember these are just tips. It’s most important to choose outfits that you genuinely love and feel great in for your portrait sessions. Being comfortable and happy with your selections are what matters most!
